| Autumn 1846 | In the fall of 1846, many immigrants arrived at Sutter's Fort. The immigrants brought measles with them and infected the Cayuse and Walla Walla Indians who were staying near the fort. Marcus Whitman, who was staying at Sutter's Fort, distributed medicine to the Indians. The Indians blamed the whites, and Marcus Whitman in particular, for the deaths of the Cayuse and Walla Walla Indians. This was to trigger the Whiteman Massacre of 1847 and the Cayuse War. | Cayuse Walla Walla | Yellow Serpent |
| 29 November 1847 | Dr. Marcus Whitman, his wife Narciss and 11 other people were murdered by Cayuse and Umatilla Indians at the Waiilatpu mission station. Henry Spalding and his wife Eliza then left the Spalding mission station. The Cayuse War began with this murder. | Cayuse Umatilla | - |
