November 1587 Juan de Onate Expedition 1598 -
Juan de Onato started his expedition from Santa Barbara (Mexico City) heading north. The expedition consisted of 400 soldiers, 130 soldiers with their families, 7000 head of cattle (oxen, cattle, sheep, goats) and 83 wagons!
The aim of the expedition was to find the legendary 7 cities of Cibola, or rather the gold that was supposed to be there.

20 March 1598 Juan de Onate Expedition 1598 -
Juan de Onate reached the present-day town of Sacramente in the province of Chihuahua.
From here, Onate's nephew Vicente Zaldivar headed north with some soldiers and captured Indians in search of a way to the Rio Grande. With the help of the Indians, Zaldivar found the Rio Grande and returned to Onate.

After an arduous march through the deserts south of Juarez, the expedition finally reached the Rio Grande near El Paso Onate claimed all of New Mexico beyond the river for Spain.

The governor of the province of New Mexico, Juan de Onate, took possession of New Mexico on behalf of the Spanish and settled in San Juan. In 1601, he wanted to expand New Spain further east.
The Pueblo Indians in Acoma initially watched the invasion, but then began to fight back. The Spaniards bloodily put down the uprising.

Juan de Onate established his headquarters on the west bank of the Rio Grande, west of San Juan Pueblo, New Mexico.

Juan de Onate arrived in the Acoma pueblo with 129 Spanish mercenaries and was able to conquer it without a fight. The Acoma had fled, as the Spaniards were considered invincible by the Acoma.

Juan de Zaldivar left the pueblo with 16 fully equipped soldiers and climbed the pueblo hill. There he was attacked by the Acoma. Zaldivar and 11 of his soldiers were killed.

Onate set off for Quivira in search of the legendary 7 cities of Cibola. The expedition consisted of 130 Spanish soldiers, 12 Franciscan monks, 130 Indian warriors and servants as well as 350 horses and mules. It marched along the Canadian River into the Texas Panhandle to near the Oklahoma border.

Onate came across the Apaches in the Texas Panhandle. The village had around 5000 inhabitants who lived in 600 houses.

Onate (probably) reached the end of his expedition in the area of present-day Arkansas City on the Walnut River. From there he returned to New Mexico.
