1765  | Spanish Missions 1769-1823 - King Charles III of Spain appointed Jose de Galvez as 'Inspector General' for New Spain (i.e. the entire Spanish territory in North and Central America). In the meantime, Russian explorers had appeared in North America and English settlers in the Ohio River valley. Galvez therefore considered it sensible to colonize the area that is now California. This was to keep the Russians and English out of Spanish territory. Galvez reached New Spain in July 1765.   | - | - |
