May 1624 The Dutch West India Company sailed to Albany and Governor's Island (New York) with 30 families. On the site of the old Link104I (1618) near Albany, the Dutch settlers built Fort Orange (Fort Oranje). It served the Dutch West India Company as a trading post for the fur trade.
A settlement was also established on Governor's Island, but this was abandoned within a year as the Dutch found more space and more reliable sources of water on Manhattan.
Lenape Indians lived on Governor's Island at this time.
