28 August 1876 Colonel Miles took up quarters on the Yellowstone River, where the Tongue River flows into the Yellowstone River ('Cantonment on Tongue River'). The army had decided on a winter campaign against the Indians.
On August 28, Colonel Miles received orders from the army to establish a fort in eastern Montana.

11 October 1876 Miles Winter Expedition 1876 -
Hunkpapa warriors ambushed a wagon train of 94 wagons and an ambulance for Colonel Miles in the 'Cantonment on Tongue River' escorted by Colonel Elwell S. Otis at Spring Creek, which had started from Glendive (in eastern Montana). The Hunkpapa managed to kill some mules and some wagons had to be left behind. The wagon train turned back and reached Glendive at 9:00 pm.

14 October 1876 Miles Winter Expedition 1876 -
Colonel Elwell S. Otis left the Glendive Cantonment again, this time with 185 soldiers of the 22nd U.S. Infantry. Otis now had 3 Gatling guns with him and was determined to reach Colonel Miles' 'Cantonment on Tongue River'.

October 1876 Colonel Nelson A. Miles established the 'Cantonment on Tongue River' at the mouth of the Tongue River into the Yellowstone River.--
End of April 1877 50 Miniconjou under Hump and 250 Northern Cheyenne under Two Moons surrendered to Colonel Miles at his headquarters 'Cantonment on Tongue River' on the Tongue River.

This group of Indians was assigned an area around Fort Keogh.

17 September 1877 Colonel Miles received a telegram with an urgent request from General Howard to help him pursue the Nez Perce.Nez Perce

18 September 1877 Colonel Miles left the 'Cantonment on Tongue River' near the present-day town of Miles City with 11 companies, 520 soldiers and scouts from the Cheyenne and Hunkpapa. He first rode west along the Yellowstone River and then north.

23 October 1877 The captured Nez Perce reached the Tongue River Agency. As agreed at the surrender, the Nez Perce were to be returned to the Lapwai Reservation. Instead, Colonel Miles received a telegram from General Sherman with orders to take the Nez Perce to Fort Abraham Lincoln (Dakota Territory).

On October 31, the Nez Perce were loaded onto boats and taken to Fort Abraham Lincoln.

8 November 1876 The 'Cantonment on Tongue River' was abandoned and officially renamed Fort Keogh. Construction of the new fort began as early as 1877. The new fort was located one mile west of the Cantonment on Tongue River.--
