For the first time on their expedition, the men of Ponce de Leon saw an Indian village with a few houses (zwischen Fort Pierce und Jensen Beach?). They were most probably Ais Native Americans.

20 April 1513 Ais Native Americans lived in the area between Cape Canaveral down to Saint Lucie Inlet on the east coast of Florida. Juan Ponce de Leon encountered this tribe as the first European on 20 April 1513 on his expedition.Ais

Because of the strong current (Gulf Stream!) The ships of Ponce de Leon did not advance. The 'San Cristobal' was even carried into the Gulf of Mexico because of the strong current. Leon decided to anchor and wait for the 'San Cristobal'.
Later the Spaniards went ashore. Indians tried to steal their boat. After the Indians had defeated a Spaniard unconscious, a fight between the Spaniards and the Ais Indians developed. The Indians injured two Spaniards. Leon again gathered his men around him and left the place during the night.

Ponce de Leon anchored with his ships at the mouth of the Saint Lucie River, near Saint Lucie Inlet, in Central East Florida. Here Leon wanted to supplement his supplies of water and firewood. On land he met about 60 Ais Indians, but the Spaniards were able to stop them. The Spaniards captured an Indian who was to serve as their guide.
